Uveitis isn’t always love at first sight. For many trainees, it’s intimidating—it’s a category of diagnoses wrapped in inflammation, requiring complex systemic workups and steroid-sparing strategies. But for those drawn to the detective work of ophthalmology, uveitis is where mystery meets meaning.
At its best, uveitis is an interdisciplinary adventure. It’s where you spot sarcoidosis from a fluorescein angiogram, suspect tuberculosis from a single choroidal nodule, or catch a masquerade syndrome before a malignancy progresses. Still, the path into uveitis can feel nebulous, especially for those in general training programs without subspecialty exposure. That’s where the Young Uveitis Specialists (YUS) group comes in.
WHY UVEITIS?
Uveitis is more than just inflammation; it’s often a signpost for deeper systemic disease, autoimmune triggers, or even malignancy. It’s the subspecialty where imaging meets internal medicine, where a dilated exam can rewrite a diagnosis, and where every patient encounter is an opportunity to think bigger than the eye.
It is also, however, an area where many trainees feel lost. There is limited exposure during residency, and the learning curve is steep. YUS was created to change that.
