2025 Bausch + Lomb Surgical Mentor Resident Program

An annual informative course designed to provide residents with valuable hands-on experience in cataract and refractive surgery.

If cataract and refractive surgery piques your interest, then look no further. To help prepare you for a career in this field, Bausch + Lomb in their commitment to continuing training, established the Surgical Mentor Resident Program (SMRP). This is the largest resident program in Bausch + Lomb’s history, featuring a fourfold increase in resident attendance—matched by a proportional rise in faculty participation to maintain the low student-to-faculty ratio and ensure meaningful access to mentors. It also earned the highest satisfaction rating to date.

What can attendees expect from this program?

Led each year by Mohamed Yassine, MD, Bausch + Lomb’s Vice President of Global Medical & Scientific Affairs, residents will gain invaluable skills on cataract and refractive surgical techniques through hands-on experience and informative sessions with some of the nation’s leading ophthalmic surgeons (Figure 1).

During the full-day interactive program, attendees can expect to:

  • Learn from faculty-presented case studies and informative lectures on the fundamentals of cataract and refractive surgical techniques, including focus on dry eye and astigmatism
  • Engage directly with esteemed faculty mentors due to a low student-to-faculty ratio to ensure personalized and engaging conversations
  • Gain extended hands-on wet lab experience, where residents will intimately work with devices from the Bausch + Lomb surgical portfolio, including the Stellaris Elite®, Eyetelligence™ software platform, SeeNa™ optical biometry and topography system, SeeLuma™ surgical system, ScoutPro® osmolarity system, TENEO™ laser platform, and the enVista® Aspire™, enVista® Envy™, and IC-8® Apthera™ IOLs (Figure 2)

What to know before attending

Before the program begins, residents are grounded in key surgical concepts through a series of brief, faculty-led digital modules. These online sessions provide foundational knowledge across topics such as preoperative planning, phaco techniques, IOL selection, and the Stellaris Elite® and Eyetelligence™ platforms.

By completing these modules in advance, residents arrive at the SMRP confident and prepared to fully engage in hands-on wet labs and case-based discussions—minimizing the need for traditional lectures and maximizing time for active, immersive learning (Videos 1 and 2).
